The chief engineer or first engineer of a ship holds a rank equivalent to the captain. Hence, their salary is on par with that of a captain. A chief engineer in the Merchant Navy is responsible for the overall functioning of the vessel. The first engineer reserves the right to declare the ship unfit for further voyage while in mid-sea.
